Frequently Asked Questions

Visiting & appointments

No appointment is required. Walk-ins are welcome at all four locations during open hours. If you'd prefer a reserved time, you can call ahead — but most patients are seen within a few minutes of arrival.

Please bring:

  • A photo ID
  • Your insurance card (if applicable)
  • The lab order or requisition from your provider

If you don't have a paper requisition, that's fine — most providers send orders to us electronically.

A standard blood draw typically takes 10–15 minutes from arrival to walking out the door. Specialty collections (glucose tolerance, 24-hour urine setup, etc.) take longer — call ahead and we'll give you an estimate.

Yes. Our phlebotomists are experienced with pediatric patients of all ages. We recommend a parent or guardian be present, and bringing along a comfort item is welcome.

Preparation & fasting

It depends on the test. Lipid panels, fasting glucose, and basic metabolic panels typically require an 8–12 hour fast. Most other tests do not. If you're unsure, check with your provider or call us at 319.366.1503.

Yes — plain water is encouraged. Staying hydrated actually makes the blood draw easier. Avoid coffee, tea, juice, gum, and mints during your fast.

In most cases, yes. Don't stop any prescribed medication without first talking to your provider. If your test is specifically affected by a medication, your provider will tell you in advance.

Results & turnaround

Most routine tests are resulted the same day. Specialty assays and pathology reports may take 2–5 business days. Your ordering provider receives results directly through their electronic medical record system.

Results are sent to the provider who ordered the test. Contact your provider's office to review them, or check your patient portal if your clinic offers one. We do not release results directly to patients without provider authorization.

Your ordering provider will review every result and contact you if any follow-up is needed. If you have questions about a specific result, your provider's office is the best place to start.

Insurance & billing

We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Bring your card to your visit and we'll verify coverage. For a definitive answer about a specific test, call your insurer with the CPT code from your provider's order.

Yes. Self-pay pricing is available for direct-access tests and for patients without coverage. Ask at the front desk and we'll print a price list for the tests you need.

In most cases, yes. You'll receive a bill from Weland Clinical Laboratories that's separate from any bills from your provider's office or hospital. Questions about a bill? Call 319.366.1503 and ask for billing.

For providers

We integrate directly with Epic, Cerner, and Athena via HL7 and FHIR. To set up integration with your EMR, or to order a test by paper requisition, contact our client services team at 319.366.1503.

Yes. We provide complimentary specimen pickup for nursing homes, clinics, and care facilities throughout Linn and Johnson counties. Pickups can be scheduled daily, weekly, or on-demand.

Absolutely. We partner with regional clinics and hospitals as a reference lab — handling overflow, specialty assays, and after-hours testing. Same-day courier service and dedicated client services Mon–Sat.
